For the past thirty years, Benton Peugh has attempted to connect with the world through the process of painting. By expanding his search beyond the constraints of style and exploring through varieties of images, Peugh seeks to find a fresh vision in each work or series of works. During these past few years, his concentration has revolved around the concept of landscape imagery becoming a means of the study of space, light and atmospheric issues. Seeing as these elements are predominate parts of our perceiving world, Peugh is trying to develop these elements into having a physical presence in his painting.

Benton Peugh's great challenge to himself is to find a universally understood yet symbolic landscape; he strives for an image that transcends reality. "Layered paint, coupled with trowel marks, scratches and other textures, cause the viewer to become aware of the flatness of a painting's surface in spite of the deep space of an image." And that is exactly what Peugh is striving to avoid.
